A verocytotoxin-producing E. coli outbreak with a surprisingly high risk of haemolytic uraemic syndrome, Denmark, September-October 2012.

چکیده
Denmark faced an outbreak of verocytotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC) O157:H7 infections in autumn 2012. Thirteen cases were diagnosed of which eight had haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). Epidemiological investigations suggested ground beef as the vehicle of the outbreak. The outbreak strain had a rare toxin gene subtype profile: eae, vtx1a and vtx2a, and a high proportion of HUS (62%) among cases, a finding previously linked with the outbreak subtype profile. Toxin subtyping can be useful to identify high risk VTEC strains.

متن کاملOutbreak of haemolytic uraemic syndrome due to Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O104:H4 among French tourists returning from Turkey, September 2011.
Eight cases of diarrhoea, including two cases of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), were identified among 22 French tourists who travelled to Turkey in September 2011. A strain of Escherichia coli O104:H4 stx2-positive, eae-negative, hlyA-negative, aggR-positive, ESBL-negative was isolated from one HUS case. Molecular analyses show this strain to be genetically similar but not indistinguishable...
متن کاملCharacterisation of the Escherichia coli strain associated with an outbreak of haemolytic uraemic syndrome in Germany, 2011: a microbiological study.
BACKGROUND In an ongoing outbreak of haemolytic uraemic syndrome and bloody diarrhoea caused by a virulent Escherichia coli strain O104:H4 in Germany (with some cases elsewhere in Europe and North America), 810 cases of the syndrome and 39 deaths have occurred since the beginning of May, 2011. We analysed virulence profiles and relevant phenotypes of outbreak isolates recovered in our laborator...
متن کاملHaemolytic uraemic syndromes in the British Isles 1985-8: association with verocytotoxin producing Escherichia coli. Part 1: Clinical and epidemiological aspects.
A prospective study of the clinical and epidemiological features of the haemolytic uraemic syndromes was conducted over a three year period in the British Isles. Two hundred and ninety eight children were reported. In two thirds of cases stool samples were analysed for the presence of Verocytotoxin producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) and neutralisable Verocytotoxin. A total of 273 (95%) patients ...
متن کاملCytokines in haemolytic uraemic syndrome associated with verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli infection.
The proinflammatory cytokines tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-6, and IL-8 were measured in plasma and urine samples from 19 children with verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) induced haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and 30 controls. TNF-alpha was detected in the plasma of two cases and one control; IL-6 in the plasma of one, and the urine of two ...
